Explorations and Experience: Racial and Cultural Literacy

Melissa Berry-Woods, Director of Learning Development and Student Success; Associate Teaching Professor of English, has published Explorations and Experience: Racial and Cultural Literacy, an interactive eBook designed to cultivate antiracist practices through learning, empathy-building, and the validation of marginalized experiences. The eBook combines reading materials with digital activities and videos, which encourages readers to confront biases, engage in difficult conversations, and recognize the structural inequalities that perpetuate discrimination through both an individualistic perspective as well as at a global scale. With a strong focus on advocacy and cultural competence, this resource is an invaluable tool for both students and educators seeking to promote critical thinking and racial literacy in education. Join us in congratulating Dr. Berry-Woods!

Melissa Berry-Woods obtained her PhD in English-Composition & Rhetoric in 2010 from the University of South Carolina. Her research interests are in African American feminist rhetoric, first-year writing and writing pedagogy.
