These interactive programs, run by the office of External Affairs, are designed to help you understand the editorial process and promote your research in articles, op-eds, and social media.

Joanna is a veteran journalist, Politico and WBUR contributor, and former Boston Globe columnist whose work has appeared in The Atlantic, Slate, The Economist, and more.
Spring 2025 Workshops
Media 101
This hands-on workshop breaks down the making of a news story, empowers you to share your expertise with the press, and gives you the tools to describe your research to a non-academic audience.

*Preference for the virtual Media 101 workshop will be given to faculty on the global campuses.
Op-Ed Workshop
This is a four-part, in-person, small-group workshop where you’ll analyze the components of an op-ed and develop a written piece that is ready to pitch to a major media outlet.

Wednesdays from January 29, 2025 to February 26, 2025 (No meeting Wednesday, February 19, 2025) from 2:00-3:30pm ET

Broadcast/Social Media Workshop
This in-person, hands-on workshop will teach you tips and tricks for talking on TV, radio, and podcasts, and the workshop will help you maximize your social media presence. All sessions will be held in the External Affairs Office, 716 Columbus Ave., 5th Floor.

Media 102
This workshop will help you continue your media preparation with hands-on practice. You’ll review the elements of a story, develop talking points, and conduct mock interviews with Northeastern journalists. Completing Media 101 is recommended prior to participating in Media 102.
