Onboarding

Welcome to Northeastern!

We are happy to have you join our faculty at this exciting and important time in the university’s history.

To make your transition to the university as smooth as possible, we encourage you to complete several tasks in advance of your actual hire date. These tasks can be found in your Workday Account after you’ve activated your Northeastern online account. Workday is the university’s platform for human resource management. You may review this job aid on how to complete the onboarding tasks in Workday. Doing so will expedite your ability to access important university resources, including the Employee Hub, your Northeastern email address, and the Canvas learning management system.

Commuter Benefits

The university partners with WageWorks to provide a pre-tax commuter benefit paid for by automatic payroll deduction.

The benefit allows you to:

  • Enroll online and receive your public transportation commuter pass in the mail
  • Pay for parking at commuter lots with pre-tax earnings automatically deducted from your paycheck
  • Purchase a commuter pass for occasional use on any public transit system in the United States

You will need to activate your Northeastern account before you can sign up for your commuter benefit. To enroll online, go to the Employee Hub Resources page, select HR Benefits & Services, then Commuter Benefit.

For more information about the commuter benefit and instructions about how to enroll please visit the Commuting & Transportation article.

For planning purposes, please be advised that the ordering deadline is the first day of the month, approximately 30 days before the Pass Month. For example, if you wish to begin using the commuter benefit on October 1, you will need to enroll by September 1; the pre-tax payroll deductions will begin in September to pay for October.

Northeastern is committed to providing benefits and programs that enable you to invest in your health and well-being and to plan for your financial future.

A comprehensive summary of the benefits and programs is available on the Benefits Home Page on the HR Service Center.

Find the Benefits Roadmap here.

You may want to prepare for enrollment by ensuring you have easy access to any needed documentation. For example, if you enroll in the family medical plan, you will need to produce a copy of your marriage license (or 1040 tax return) and/or the birth certificates (or 1040 tax return) of your children.

Two benefits, the Basic Retirement Account and Long-Term disability, have a waiting period that may be waived depending upon your prior employment. To assist in your transition to Northeastern, we encourage you to complete the waiver form at your earliest convenience. This will expedite your ability to take full advantage of these benefits.

For more information on the benefits program, you are encouraged to talk to your manager or department chair about attending an HR-run New Hire Orientation within your first 30 days at the university. To ensure a smooth transition to the university, please navigate to this guide on Onboarding and follow instructions there, prior to our New Hire Program, administered in Workday.
